Key management is hard

Cryptographic keys, despite their established history, are often mistakenly viewed as a fully-explored field. Yet, the nuances of key management in blockchain are anything but simple.

Key challenges become even more complex when focusing on (1) security in adversarial settings and (2) reliability during disruptions. Our interest in key storage increased upon hearing developers underrate its complexity, erroneously reducing it to basic data storage. By 2019, hacked and misplaced private keys had led to the loss of about 20% of all Bitcoins, valued at around $200 billion.

How we fell in love with MPC

In 2019, CEO Clarisse Hagège, on break from Crédit Agricole Corporate Investment Bank (CA-CIB) joined a startup accelerator where she met the founders of IOV, a Cosmos-based DNS provider.

When IOV became Starname for their initial coin offering, they enlisted Clarisse's help for the token sale. Her pitch drew many investors, but security concerns over wearable hardware for key storage led to last minute refusals. Disappointed but determined, she started researching key management and heard of multi-party computation (MPC), a cryptographic protocol to decentralize keys and remove single points of failure. This led to the creation of Dfns, revolutionizing the accessibility and security of digital assets.
